Lathyrus odoratus Spencer Varieties

Our sweet peas have keeled main stems as in nature.  Each flower stalk is matched with its corresponding leaf tendril stalk and named varieties have the correct number of flowers per stalk for the variety (if known)  Individual flowers are built of four petals and a keel as in life and transmit light the way real sweet peas do making them ideal for backlit scenes.

The planter shown here is a reproduction of an English lead cistern turned into a planter.  The sweet peas are supported by pea sticks .  The varieties shown have been developed since the 1960’s by various growers.  (varieties shown are Leamington (pale lilac blue)  Beaujolais (wine red) and Carmen Rose

Spencer varieties of sweet peas first appeared in 1901 at the country seat of the Earl of Spencer, and were in common circulation in nurseries beginning in 1905
